Who says socks are boring?

.........not me! Not when it's midwinter, a chill wind is blowing, your toes are cold - and there's a such a wonderful array of colours to choose from. 20150929_112346

I love Naturally Selina Scott socks. Not only are the colours striking but the mohair they are made from is extremely warm, not at all scratchy and doesn't leave your feet clammy - plus they are machine washable. The short walking socks are the best I have worn for rambles.

For the past 20 years the former TV presenter, Selina Scott, has lived on a 200-acre farm with a herd of Angora goats on the edge of the North York Moors. She has a delightful little shop in the Shambles in Malton  showcasing her designs. As well as the walking socks which are also great for lounging in....

Cosy toes

.....I also love my kid mohair socks, which my husband gave me last Christmas (the appreciation is an age thing). He knows that my feet are always cold (hopefully it's a case of cold feet, warm heart) and these warm them up every time I wear them.

Keeping warm is an essential part of the winter survival guide. The Scandinavians do cosy very well - they even have a name for winter cosiness. For the Danes it is hygge, the Norwegians call it koselig and for the Swedes it is mys. It's a kind of lifestyle strategy to beat the winter blues and it's all about wearing the right clothes, doing activities appropriate for the weather and eating heartwarming food.

It's an idea that appeals to me. It's all about hunkering down in the cosiness of your own home, candles lit, fairy lights on, tucked up with a good book or a magazine, a mug of hot chocolate (or some mulled wine if you prefer), playing classic board games with the kids, having friends and family round, and getting out for a bracing walk (in your Scandi style sweater of course - think Danish drama).

So if you are looking for a Christmas gift for a loved one or fancy treating yourself, please don't overlook the much derided pair of socks. Chances are they will be requesting another pair next year!
